Description
Our REF-12-0-A is an external reference electrode. It is not integrated in a soil Redox probe. It can be used in combination with our B-type analog soil Redox probes (e.g., ORP-30-1-B, ORP-40-4-B and ORP-80-4-B).
The advantage of an external reference electrode is that maintenance can be performed on the reference electrode (e.g., refilling the reference electrode with supersaturated KCl (4.76 M @ 25°C) without retrieving the soil Redox probe(s) from the soil/sediment. The REF-12-0-A can be placed directly in the soil/sediment or in a (ground)water well, located near the soil Redox probe(s).
The REF-12-0-A can be used for both handheld and standalone (with datalogger) Redox measurements.
For handheld measurements it can, for example, be connected with a banana jack and adaptor (BNC to 2 x banana jack) to the Lutron YK-23RP mV meter together with a B-type analog soil Redox probe (e.g., ORP-30-1-B, ORP-40-4-B and ORP-80-4-B).
For standalone measurements it can be connected to a datalogger with an input impedance ≥ 10 Giga Ohm. One reference electrode can be used together with multiple soil Redox probes to perform Redox measurements in a monitoring network. We advise to use 2 reference electrodes. By monitoring the potential difference between the 2 reference electrodes, it can be determined when maintenance of the reference electrodes is necessary. See our soil Redox probe manual for suggestions for datalogger connections.
The reference electrode contains harmless supersaturated KCl (4.76 M @ 25 °C) for long-lasting soil Redox measurements. For more information see Electrolyte-100sat.
